After watching Liverpool throughout my life I have come to the conclusion that our team is too British. There have been some great British player that have played in red over the years. Players like Fowler, Barnes, Rush, King Kenny and Mcmanaman. These players have been at the top of their game when they came to play for Liverpool.
The last time Liverpool had a decent season was the 2008/09 campaign when they came 2nd. Their best side was Reina in goal, in defence Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel and Auerlio, in midfield Kuyt, Mascherano, Alonso, Riera and Gerrard and then Torres alone upfront. The only players that were from Britain were Carragher and Gerrard, whereas, at the time there was a big Spanish influence on the club to get them up to 2nd in the premier league. The big Spanish influence was down to the manager Rafa Benitez.
If you look at Liverpool this season under Fenway sports (the company that want us to buy good British players) we are not as good as the powers of Manchester City/United, Arsenal, Tottenham or Chelsea. The reason for this is because them teams buy players that are known and can score and defend well.
In the last transfer window Liverpool tried to improve their team by buying players like Jordan Henderson £20m (Sunderland), Stewart Downing £20m (Aston Villa), Charlie Adam £7m (Blackpool) and Craig Bellamy Free (Manchester City). Also Liverpool bought the big Geordie striker Andy Carroll £35m in last January from Newcastle. From all these players they all are in Liverpool's first team line-up but in my opinion the cheapest player we bought, Craig Bellamy, has had the most impact on the Liverpool team. As pretty much every player bought is an over expenditure of money I think Andy Carroll was one of the worse. As he has been linked with teams now for around £10m that is more what he was like when he played for Newcastle rather than £35m.
There are some great British players out there at the moment for example; Joe Hart (Manchester City) Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Micah Richards (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea) and Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) to name a few.
The premier League has evolved a lot since the last time Liverpool won the first division. Foreign players are the way forward to win a team the league, although you need British players because of the FA's law. Manchester City, who sit top of league, have Joe Hart, Micah Richards, James Miller and Gareth Barry in their first team squad who can all win or change a game for their side.
