A penalty shout at each end too in the first hald as Jermain Defoe shot was blocked by Per Mertesacker from a yard away.
Down the other end Alex Iwobi had a shot blocked by Deandre Yedlin when the ball ricochet onto his arm, no penalty given for either.
Sunderland had the better chances in the second half as Defoe, Yann M’Vila and Wahbi Khazri all forced Petr Cech into saves early on in the half.
Defoe had a great chance to win it when he lobbed the ball over Cech, just after the hour mark.
Mannone miss places his header which falls to Danny Welbeck but he is forced off the ball by Younes Kaboul.
Duncan Watmore then has a chance as he fires a cross in which Cech has to deal with but it comes to an offside Defoe.
